چکیده

Six glycosidases were determined in: (1) lenses of alloxan-diabetic rats; (2) rabbit lenses incubated in high-glucose media in vitro; and (3) human senile cataracts, diabetic senile cataracts, and autopsy lenses. In diabetic rat lenses, the activities of /3-glucosaminidase, fi-galactosidase, and P-fucosidase increased with cataract progression as compared to control lenses. Glycosidase activities, however, did not differ in human diabetic cataracts (patients with normal blood glucose levels) as compared to human senile cataracts or autopsy lenses. Incubation of rabbit lenses in high-glucose Tyrode's media did not affect the glycosidase activities as compared to rabbit lenses incubated in normal Tyrode's media.

Bilateral cataract formation via acute spontaneous fracture of the lens following treatment of hyperglycemic hyperosmolar syndrome

Purpose Acute development of cataracts that may be transient is known to occur during correction of diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar syndrome. Nettleship in 1885 was the first to describe the presence of a transient cataract in three diabetic patients that grew worse and eventually cleared with treatment.1 We present a case of irreversible cataracts formed by nuclear fractur...

V. Studies on Cataract 1. Curcumin and Turmeric Delay Streptozotocin - Induced Diabetic Cataract in Rats

Chronic hyperglycemia is a major determinant in the development of secondary complications of diabetes, including diabetic cataract. Studies indicate that diabetes increase the risk of development of cataract. Though the etiology of cataract is not fully understood, oxidative damage to the constituents of the eye lens is considered to be a major mechanism in the initiation and progression of va...

Changes in erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and reduced glutathione (GSH) activities in the development of senile and diabetic cataracts.

Oxidative and osmotic stress have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cataracts. Reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) mediate peroxidation of membrane lipids and cause irreversible damage to lens proteins. The purpose of this study was to assess the changes in erythrocyte glucose- 6-phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme (G6PD) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in the development of senile and dia...

Changes Associated with the Appearance of Mature Sugar Cataracts.

Analyses for lens sugar alcohols, fructose, glucose, ATP, dry weight, hydration, and extracellular space were made before and after the appearance of mature diabetic and galactose cataracts. The appearance of mature cataracts in galactose-fed rats is associated with a marked and sudden decrease in the level of lens sugar alcohol, ATP, and dry weight, and an increase in lens hydration and extrac...

Inhibitory Effect of r-Hirudin Variant III on Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Cataracts in Rats

The in vivo inhibitory effect of r-hirudin variant III (rHV3) on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic cataracts in rats was investigated. SD-rats were firstly made diabetic by a single intraperitoneal injection of 2% (W/V) STZ (65 mg/kg). Two weeks later, cataract formation was examined by slit lamp microscope, and the cataracted animals were randomly grouped. The animals in the treated groups...
